The Obituary of Douglas Neil Stables
This is a transcript of Douglas's Obituary, that was published in The Barnsley Chronicle on December 22nd, 1992.
Mr. D. Stables - Evensong was cancelled last Sunday owing to the sudden death, in church, of Mr. Douglas Stables, prior to the service. Born in 1926 he was an "old boy" of Barnsley Grammar School. He enjoyed catering, his last post being chef at Banks Hall Residential Home up to his retirement last year. He was Church Tower captain in charge of the bell ringers, on the Parochial Church Council, stalwart of the church choir and a regular reader of lessons, being a devout regular worshipper. He was secretary and trustee of the Village Museum, well known for his informative and ever humorous talks and slideshows of old Cawthorne. He was also a steam engine enthusiast.
Douglas will be sadly missed by the village, many friends and relatives.
