Jonathon and Marshall Stables – 18th century Horsforth Medical Families rediscovered.

Dr Bernard Ryan describes the lives and medical practices of Jonathon and Marshall Stables as discovered through
the chance find of documents during demolition of a building in East Parade, Leeds. Jonathon (b1767) was born in
Horsforth and apprenticed as an apothecary and then qualified as a surgeon. His son, Marshall, (b 1795) qualified
as an apothecary and surgeon in 1816 little more than a year after the Apothecary’s Act of 1815, a turning point in
medical education. He like his father practiced in Horsforth until his early death, probably from cholera in the
epidemic of 1832.
