Barnburgh Tithe Awards for 1839
The following information is transcribed from the copy of the Barnburgh Tithe Awards for 1839 that are held by Doncaster Archive Services. This consists of a very large map of Barnburgh, showing the location of every house, garden and field, each being numbered and then indexed in a hand-written book giving details about each property and its owner or occupier.
Tithes[1]
were a tax of one tenth of the produce of the land, which was originally paid by
the parish for the upkeep of the church and its clergy. This situation was
complicated by the dissolution of religious houses in the sixteenth century.
Many of them had been given the right to collect tithes in particular parishes
by benefactors. The right to collect tithes was then sold off along with the
monastic lands, and passed out of the hands of religious bodies into the
possession of laymen. The tithes of the parish of Doncaster passed into private
hands in this way.
The Tithe Commutation Act of
1836 resolved disputes over the assessment and collection of tithes, often
fuelled by the hostility of Nonconformists to a church tax. This allowed tithes
to be changed into a fixed monetary payment, and involved the making of an award
that identified the landowners and the property that they owned. The majority of
awards were made in the decade after 1836.
I have transcribed here the holdings of every Stables living in Barnburgh at this time, as you will see, our family owned or occupied a significant amount of land around Barnburgh and Harlington, including a Blacksmiths Shop, a Quarry and a Road:
Maps showing the exact locations of all of the properties and fields are available on this web-site.
