John Stables (1792-1849)
John was the eldest son of William & Ann Stables (nee Pailthorpe) of Barnburgh and was baptised at St Helen's, Marr, on 16th September 1792. In 1812, he married Ann Huby at St Saviour's Church, York, where he described himself as a footman. They moved to Embleton, Northumberland, where he was butler to Sir Henry Grey (brother to Prime Minister Earl Grey of tea fame), who lived in Fallodon Hall, and Hertford Street in Mayfair, London. They had two children, William & John. (William joined the Dragoon Guards, but deserted in 1839 and emigrated to America. There is more information on William here. John married Mary Kitchingman and lived in Doncaster. You can read about their son here). Ann died in 1825 aged only 33. Sir Henry made his will in 1842 and John was one of the witnesses. One of the servants living in the house in Mayfair was Margaret Forster & after Sir Henry's death in 1845 John & Margaret married. They wouldn't have been allowed to get married while still in service at that time. They came back to live in Harlington, where Margaret died just three years later, and was buried at Darrington, where John's first wife had come from. In the same year, John's grandchild was born and was given the name Forster. This name continued to be used in subsequent generations. In 1849, when John made his will he described himself as a gentleman and left a relatively substantial estate to both his sons, which included the Crown Inn at Barnburgh. He was buried at Barnburgh church on 24th July 1849.
